According to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, a driver fled from deputies early Sunday morning. An investigation is ongoing regarding the resulting double fatality.

Shortly after 4:15 a.m. Feb 1, a  deputy spotted a vehicle with faulty lights and no license plates near East 57th Street and North Garfield Avenue in Loveland.. Before the deputy could initiate a traffic stop, the driver turned off the vehicle’s lights and fled.

The driver evaded  the authorities for several miles, reaching speeds of up to 120 mph while traveling northbound on I-25. The vehicle exited at Mountain Vista and continued east on Weld County Road 84.

The driver lost control of the vehicle near the intersection of Pheasant Crest Drive and WCR 84. It rolled and struck a utility pole, ejecting two male occupants. One man was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the second died after being transported to a nearby hospital. The Fort Collins Coloradoan reported that their names were Jose Meza, 23, and X-avier Cruz, 19, both of Loveland.

A third female occupant was extracted from the vehicle and was dispatched to a local hospital for care. No other injuries were reported.

No contact with the vehicle was made by deputies prior to the incident. The Larimer County Forensics Unit and CRASH team responded to the scene.
