Watch your speed. Fort Collins Police Services has implemented the use of two transportable speed cameras, expanding the use of Automated Vehicle Identification Systems (AVIS).

“The two transportable units are stationed in a specific location for 30 days. Currently, one is positioned at 800 W. Prospect Road, the other is at 300 Riverside Road,” said J. Gilmore, director of communication for Fort Collins Police Services.

AVIS has been present in Fort Collins since 1997. The city adopted the use of speed cameras and radar cars in an effort to lower vehicle crashes and fatalities. The system uses automated cameras to capture speeding violations as well as violations at red lights. The use of this system falls under Colorado state law 42-4-110.5 and Fort Collins city ordinances 1106 and 615.

This law was expanded in 2024, which resulted in six stationary red light cameras being added at the following intersections:

  • Drake Road and South College Avenue

  • South Timberline Road and East Harmony Road

  • South Shields Street and West Harmony Road

  • South Lemay Avenue and East Drake Road

  • South Shields Street and West Prospect Road

  • South Shields Street and West Mulberry Road

Fort Collins also uses radar cameras on vehicles.

“There are four upfitted Jeep SUVs that relocate around the city where speeding is prevalent. They can be reassigned throughout the day” Gilmore said.

The transportable units move around the city based on data collected by the stationary cameras and vehicle cameras, which determine where the most speeding infractions occur.

In the time frame from January 2025 to the end of August, 54,735 total citations had been issued from the red-light cameras, intersection radars, radar vehicles, and the transportable units.

“The AVIS system in Fort Collins is a helpful tool for police officers. There are five officers assigned to the Traffic Safety Unit, and addressing speed is an important part of overall traffic safety,” Gilmore said.

The radar cameras placed at 800 West Prospect Road and 300 Riverside Road were placed at the beginning of September and will be moved at the end of September or early October. Tickets for speeding violations are $40, while red-light violations are $75. These tickets are civil penalties and do not take points off of a driver's license. However, speeding violations over 25mph are served directly by a police officer.
